An Evening of Melodic Bliss: Swara-Hubli Invites You to Experience Classical Music on Nov-17
HUBBALLI: Mumbai-based cultural organisation Banyan Tree Events is pleased to be bringing its unique festival Swara – Music for Life for of Hubli on Friday, November 17 at 5:30 pm at the Sawai Gandharva Hall.
Swara – Music for Life is an initiative by Banyan Tree for the tier-two cities in India. This festival has featured not just the great masters but also the best of upcoming talent in each city in order to encourage them. Since its inception 12 years ago, this festival has travelled to 11 cities in India – namely Visakhapatnam, Nagpur, Lucknow, Surat, Coimbatore, Mysore, Jaipur, Kolkata, Guwahati, Trichy and Varanasi.
Banyan Tree is extending the experience of the festival for music-lovers of Hubli for the first time this year, supported by Edelweiss Foundation. The festival is being presented in association with the Gangubai Hangal Sangeet Vidyalaya and the Dr. Puttaraj Gawai Pratisthan.
This is an especially important effort, owing to the place that the Hubli-Dharwad belt holds in the history of Hindustani Classical Music, despite being located in the south of India. Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, founder of the Kirana Gharana, initiated his most famous student Sawai Gandharva in Dharwad, and it is this link that aided in the development of Hubli-Dharwad as an important site for an exchange between Hindustani and Carnatic Classical Music, bridging divides between North and South India.
As an ode to the soil that created legendary musicians such as the aforementioned Pt. Sawai Gandharva, his students Smt. Gangubai Hangal and Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, senior maestros such as Pt. Mallikarjun Mansur, Pt. Kumar Gandharva and several others, Banyan Tree’s Swara bears testament to the significance of the region and its inhabitants – all endowed with a natural affinity towards Indian Classical Music.
Swara-Hubli presents performances by the highly renowned, or arguably the most renowned singer from the region today – Padma Pt. Venkatesh Kumar, as also a recital by Pravin Godkhindi, the acclaimed flautist from Dharwad. Also performing would be two child prodigies – a Tabla Solo by Master Pradyumna Karpur and a Violin Performance by Kumari Sinchana Dayanand Danageri. These artists have especially been chosen to highlight and celebrate the rich musical heritage of the region, marking the event as a fitting ode to the continuous culture and legacy of Indian Classical Music present there.
